Have you ever been in a dilemma of whether or not to renew your certification?

If yes, what was the issue?

The value of the PMP is neither abstract nor universal.
It is always contextual.
It depends on the market where the professional operates, the sector, and the level of maturity of organizations in project management.

In some countries or institutional contexts, the PMP is a clear signal of credibility and access.
It opens doors, creates a shared language, and facilitates professional recognition. In other contexts, especially where practice carries more weight than certification, the return is lower and the relevance tends to be more symbolic than operational.

The renewal dilemma emerges precisely here.
The question is not whether the PMP has value in general, but whether it continues to have value in my market today, for the type of work I do and for where I want to evolve professionally.

At the same time, renewal implies continuous knowledge updating.
The decision makes sense when that learning is valued, both at a personal level and by the market where those skills are actually applied.
When that valuation is absent, renewal stops being automatic and becomes a strategic decision.

I reached that crossroads once, wondering if renewal was still necessary. After some thought, I saw that the certification pushed me to keep learning and stay aligned with evolving practices. It also kept me connected with peers and industry trends. That reminder of long term value made the decision clear. Renewal supports growth even when doubts appear.

Unless holding a credential is an ego boost, it should come down to a simple cost/benefit analysis. If you are able to earn sufficient PDUs and the renewal costs are covered by your employer OR if holding a credential enables you to land a gig or is a requirement for your job then you renew it. Otherwise, it is just wasted money and time.

In my case, I opt to renew my PMP since some potential employers might prefer candidates with a current and active PMP (we could discuss whether this makes sense). PMI membership, on the contrary, is down to a personal preference and cost/benefit assessment.

I hold all PMI credentials, and never been into this dilemma because those are valuable credentials. In the future, I might consider not renewing couple of them but the PMP would definitely not be part of those, if any.
