I read--via an LLM query--that the 7th edition of the PMBOK Guide is a better study guide than the 8th, if you plan to take the pre-July updated exam. Is that the case?
The PMBOK Guide, Seventh Edition is one of multiple references supporting the current exam. However, it is not the only source of knowledge used for the exam questions so while you can certainly refer to it in your studying, you will want to take a broader approach such as a self-study guide or a PMP prep course to get exposure to additional knowledge.

David, I agree with Kiron. Moreover, the July change in the exam is a major one as it will capture evolving content and new focus areas like AI and sustainability, refreshed domains, include more focus on agile and hybrid approaches and it will feature more interactive and scenario-based formats that reflect real-world challenges.
That said, it is hard to tell which version to study from but if it was me, I personally would consider the 7th edition as one of the resources if I am sitting for the exam prior to the exam change date and will consider the 8th edition if sitting for the exam after the exam change. Good Luck! Saving Changes...

If you’re taking the PMP before the July 2026 exam update, the situation is simpler than it sometimes sounds. The current exam is still based on the existing Exam Content Outline, which aligns primarily with PMBOK 7th Edition concepts plus other standard PMI references. The full alignment with PMBOK 8th Edition and the new ECO only comes with the updated exam launching in July 2026.
PMBOK 8th, released in late 2025, introduces meaningful refinements in principles, performance domains, and focus areas. However, those changes do not materially affect how the exam works today.
Practically speaking, candidates testing before the update should anchor their preparation on the current ECO and PMBOK 7th–aligned materials. Using PMBOK 8th as a primary study guide at this stage can add noise rather than clarity. PMBOK 8th becomes the right reference once the updated exam goes live. Saving Changes...
