What signals help you tell different kinds of AI work apart—and what tends to go wrong when everything gets lumped together?

Have you ever been in a conversation where “AI” meant different things to different people? What tipped you off?

Share your experiences navigating what’s really being asked when someone says “we should use AI” in the comments below.

Yes, i agree that when someone says let use AI, they mean the technology itself and most cases without referring to AI pattern or Model. This statement is mostly driven from the need to complete the work with speed to meet the client needs and timelines.

In the world that I have been in for the last 4 years, "We should use AI" means we are crunched for time need an answer quick. LLMs are very good at taking a very large document and getting bringing it down to a size that is easy to deal with. It can take the law that just changed and give you the points that are important to you. It is also very good at taking your thought putting them into a document that looks professional and polished. What might have been a multiple day process may have turned into a few hours.

What is lost when we do not describe our problems & reach for solutions in a automated, augmented or autonomous way? Are humans losing critical thinking skills, by reflexive reaching for the closest AI model? Much like handwriting skills which encompass kinesthetic, visual & even sound & smell senses into communication, will humans "evolve" to a babysitter state whereby we are coddled by our AI models sycophantly participating in our own loss of core understanding of what reality is composed?

As PMs can we learn to use Infinity as a tool, an assistant or agent? I've taken all of the available PMI courses on AI. Good questions are being asked & some good answers are offered. It is our responsibility as PMs to guide our colleagues & even our leadership towards a practical realistic use of AAA intelligence - one that builds value & proffers positive solutions to some of the most complex problems humans face.

Illuminating discussion arose from a scintillating question. Thank you for all of your insights. Each & every one of you is making a positive difference in this chaordic world!

Are we looking to automate a repetitive process, or are we looking for insights to help us make better decisions?

Now everyday new avatar of AI is emerging, and it is very important to understand which AI is good for the given function. There are many specialists and SMEs exists in the world, but the key is to understand who does what and who is the best one for your needs. One function like Project Management, requires different tools from Initialization to closure. Of course, AI can do wonders, but we need humans in between to monitor, evaluate, and control.

When someone says "we should use AI", they're usually expressing anxiety, ambition, or both -but they haven't yet defined a problem, a solution, or a success criterion. Your job is to help them move from "AI" (a category) to a specific capability, applied to a specific problem, measured by a specific outcome - value driven. How you frame your response and guidance is also driven by " Who is "we"? A CTO mandate is very different from a Product Manager proposal. The top-down and bottom-up dynamics should be considered as well.

In my experience, when what they mean is a fast solution or a first attempt that points them in the right direction. Rarely is it about the technology itself.
