Francisco, I was among the first professionals to earn the credential when it was originally called PMO-CP through PMOGA. It’s a strong certification, and I’ve seen it evolve significantly over the years in very positive ways. The framework has matured, the standards have become more robust, and it continues to provide meaningful value for PMO professionals.

Rami, and community: how earning your PMI-PMOCP has boosted your career beyond PMP certification?

Octavio, both certifications serve different purposes. While the PMP is widely recognized as the gold standard for project management, it does not go deeply into the structure, governance, and strategic role of a PMO, nor does it cover portfolio and program management in significant depth.

Earning the PMI-PMOCP helped me expand my understanding of the PMO landscape in terms of how PMOs operate, how they create value for organizations, and how they align strategy with execution. It strengthened my perspective beyond managing individual projects and into enabling organizational project success at scale.

That said, not every credential necessarily boosts your career in a direct or immediate way. Over the years I have earned more than 50 credentials. Some have clearly accelerated my career, while others have primarily expanded my knowledge and perspective. I see certifications as part of a broader commitment to lifelong learning. Continuous professional development is something I actively pursue, not only to advance professionally but also to keep evolving with the discipline and contribute more effectively to the organizations and communities I serve.

Thanks for sharing, Rami. It’s very interesting how a PMO can help organizations achieve their goals. In my previous job, I struggled with functional managers and the board of directors while trying to explain how beneficial PMI best practices can be, as well as attempting to build strong, defined governance for every project. However, now that I understand the role of the PMO a little better, I can see that it was the missing piece in that organization.

uFrancisco Matheus Chagas /uthe two certifications serve different purposes.
While the PMP is widely recognized as the gold standard for project management, it does not deeply address the structure, governance, and strategic role of the PMO, nor does it extensively cover portfolio and program management.
The PMI-PMOCP certification helped me broaden my perspective on how PMOs operate, create organizational value, and align strategy with execution—moving beyond managing individual projects to enabling enterprise-level success.
That said, not every certification directly accelerates a career. Over the years, I have earned more than 3 certifications. Some had a clear impact on my professional growth, while others mainly expanded my knowledge and perspective. I see certifications as part of a broader commitment to lifelong learning and continuous professional development.
