Synthetic petrol and petroleum products have been around late 1970s and the 1980s. After SASOL took over, there has not been much advancement since 1992 due to the lack of investments.

Just like synthetic diamonds, it might take some time for the effectiveness and usefulness of synthetic petrol and petroleum products will become visible in years to come. This technology, based primarily on graphite and coal, would be very useful for Australia, as Australia has abundant Coal.

As a PM if I had the investment portfolio, I would make sure to get hold of this technology. Who knows

how synthetic petroleums may be useful?

As an Investment PM would you advise same or against?

Interesting perspective. As an Investment PM focused on sustainable solutions, I would be cautious. While synthetic petroleum, such as SASOL’s, could leverage local coal resources, its long-term environmental impact and alignment with sustainability goals must be carefully assessed before investing. Balancing innovation potential with ESG considerations is key.

From a sustainability perspective, I’d approach it cautiously. Synthetic fuels can offer energy security and technological value, but their long-term environmental footprint and alignment with decarbonization goals are critical factors.

Any investment decision would need to weigh innovation potential against ESG impact, regulatory trends, and whether the technology truly supports a transition to cleaner energy systems.
