I have personally never done this transition but every now and then I get tempted to change to a contract position.

For me their multiple motivations;

1. Independence from a lot of unnecessary politics. (atleast internal)
2. Better control and ownership of work packages
3. Ability to share unbiased opinion (specially when working in customer-vendor models)
4. More Money
5. Neutral position (sometimes helps to resolve project conflict)

and I guess many more perks and risks that come with it :-)
