Executives are flooded with metrics, but stories connect emotionally. Should PMs shift toward narrative-driven reporting that links numbers to impact?

Should data storytelling replace dashboards as the main tool for communicating value? The short answer is no; they are complementary. Not all executives take the time to look at dashboards before a meeting. Some come prepared with questions. Some want to go over every detail on an update. Others just want to focus on the items that have slipped or are at risk. In the end, they want enough information about the things that are important to them to be able to make any decisions quickly and easily, or a path to get there if it's not quick and easy. Understanding their needs is going to help you know how to communicate value; dashboards and stories are just tools. Both have a place.

Great question.
I don’t think data storytelling replaces dashboards—it complements them. Dashboards show the what, but storytelling explains the why it matters and what action is needed. For executives, the most effective approach is often a clear narrative supported by a few meaningful metrics rather than a screen full of data.

I agree. Dashboards provide visibility, but they don’t always communicate meaning on their own.
Combining both: a short narrative that explains the context, risks, or impact, supported by a few key metrics from the dashboard. That way leaders understand not only the numbers, but why they matter.
