Srikana - As a new Project Manager, I would recommend focusing on Project Management 'Ways of working'. Spend some time learning the specific project management tools that are used in your organization, get comfortable with working with the project team as well as leadership. Part of the initial focus should include Business Acumen which will be helpful throughout your career.

I started my career as an accidental project manager. If I were to restart my career, having at least some awareness of what I know today, I would focus on 1) building relationships, 2) trust assessment and operating with constrained trust, and 3) unlearning the things that got me to that point that weren't going to help me grow in my new role.

With PMI's emphasis on M.O.R.E., it's easy to want to put business acumen at the top of the list. It is an important set of skills, but it's really part of the long game. It will help you grow in your career, but it's not usually the most important skillset for someone just getting started.

Good question, Srikana. If I were starting today, I would focus first on strong communication and stakeholder management, then build business acumen and data literacy. Tools and technologies change, but the ability to align people and decisions remains central to effective project management.

If I were starting as a Project Manager today, I would prioritize AI literacy first, because it amplifies every other skill. A PM who understands how to use AI tools delivers faster, communicates better, and manages risks more proactively than one relying purely on traditional methods. Business acumen and data skills matter too, but in 2026, AI literacy is the multiplier that sharpens everything else.
