Artificial intelligence and traditional Information Technology are no longer opposing domains—they are merging to form the core of modern digital innovation. AI brings adaptive, learning-driven capabilities that automate routine work, enhance decision‑making, and reshape how organizations interpret and act on data. IT continues to serve as the essential foundation that enables this intelligence to function, supplying the infrastructure, governance, security, and integration frameworks required for stability and scale. The shift underway is less about replacement and more about reinvention: AI is taking over many operational IT tasks, while IT is transforming into a more strategic, architecture‑focused discipline. The organizations that will lead the future are those that combine AI’s analytical strength with IT’s structural rigor. In this model, AI expands capability while IT ensures resilience, reliability, and ethical oversight—creating a digital ecosystem that is more agile, intelligent, and adaptive than either could achieve alone.

Agreed — it’s less about AI replacing IT, and more about how AI is reshaping what IT needs to become.
In practice, AI may accelerate decisions and automation, but IT still provides the governance, resilience, and control framework that makes those outcomes sustainable.

AI accelerates action, but IT anchors it. Governance, resilience, and control ensure AI‑driven speed remains secure, transparent, and sustainable as organizations scale intelligent decision‑making.

AI and IT aren’t really competing. AI expands what systems can do, while IT provides the infrastructure, governance, and reliability that make those capabilities usable at scale.
The shift is that IT becomes more strategic, focusing on architecture, security, and integration, while AI enhances analysis, automation, and decision support.

AI is bringing changes worldwide to all of our social and work environments, and AI is embedded into some of the popular software platforms that we all use. AI tools are very powerful and gain provide a huge productivity boost, however, AI tools are not perfect. The IS Organization should have the proper governance and oversight in place to ensure that AI tools are rolled out to provide the benefits while preventing exposure to some of the risks that are inherent in AI tools.
