What project management tools are commonly being used nowadays and why are they used instead of others?

For scheduling, organizations who are on the Microsoft platform, they would tend to use MS Project so as not to deviate from the platform.

For organizations, who are looking from an end user perspective or integrated project management tool that is easy to use or deploy, they may look at Saas PM applications that are already available in the market.

Check out Gartner's Magic Quadrant on IT Project and Portfolio Management Tool. I believe that Forrester has an annual research also on this topic.
