I will write about my personal experience. The next step into my career was business analyst. The role is close to the organizational strategy and for me it is a big challenge and big fun work in that role. Saving Changes...
Hello! this is a very good question. I think there are a lot of different ways to the same finish. In my case I started as a Software Developer, after that I learned about Scrum and was able to be promoted to Scrum master.
At that point I understood that we needed more control of the projects that we have developing that's why I Started to learn PMI and BA methodology. For different causes I had to leave that company but I still continue learned things and improved my skills.
After that I was able to enter as a Jr. Project Manager and was to that point that I finally understood how important is to be a good PM for the stakeholders, your job, your company but more important for yourself.
I wasn't prepared for that - I would love that school could teach you about how to negotiate or manage people- but i faced the troubles and I was able remedy the issues on time. As you can see , no matter how much you study o learn about Project management there is always another way to be better. My next step is to achieve PMP certification and after that The agile one :) Saving Changes...

Hi Nancy,
Next natural step for a good experienced PM is to become Project Or Program Director or even a PMO Leader. In my area of Engineering and Construction there are many other opportunitis , including in the Engineering or Business side.

There are probably as many directions as there are personality types, but one might argue that you have to be a certain kind of crazy to be a PM to begin with and most of us crazies tend to go in predictable directions. So with that in mind, the most likely roles are some of the ones mentioned here by others - Program, Portfolio or PMO management, or as Mr. Conte points out, Business Analysis or Business Architecture.
I've only recently discovered Business Architecture through a practitioner/co-worker and find it to be fascinating and a position that adds great benefit. Having been in a PM/Business Analyst role in the past, I wanted to know how the two differed and found the article below for those who are interested.
Although I've chosen the Program Manager and PMO Leader role myself, I will always think in Business Architecture terms when reviewing business cases and determining if the proposed solution adds new capabilities and whether gaps were overlooked. Look out people, I have a new arsenal of tricky questions to trip up your presentation and send you back to polish your PPT. [insert evil laugh] Saving Changes...
