As a trainer, I find organisations differ widely in the way they plan for a project and which later affects the project scope, time and budget. Importance of writing a Business case and giving due time and resources for its development is not very prevalent. So in absence of a business case many things such as stakeholders etc. get overlooked and may cause unnecessary complications later.
Would like to know about your experiences in writing a business case or if not then how do you see that key aspects and issues are considered in the beginning of a project.

Business case preparation and presentation is mandatory in some organizations for purposes of funding request or resource allocation. In the absence of Business Case, the Project Charter would be the go-to document for project approval by the Business/ Project Owner. Through the project charter, the Business Sponsor and project team would have a mutual understanding of the high level requirements of the projects; e.g. purpose, resources, etc.

The role accountable to write a business case is the business analyst. It was from years but from this year is explicit recognized by the PMI. No matter the name you have to write a document where "the vision" about the initiative is stated. The intention of this document is simple: you have to convince to the people who will invest into the initiative about the initiative deserves the resources needed to be assigned to it. And when I talked about resources I am not talking about money only. On the other side each initiative demands a change into the organizational structure so the impact must be evaluated. Each stakeholder must feel that they will be more "rich" with the change than without it (once again I am not using rick referring to money only). The business case (or any other name you like to use) is the place to write about that.
