We expect leaders to drive outcomes, ensure alignment, and be accountable for success or failure. But in reality, most projects operate in environments shaped by factors leaders don’t fully control organizational politics, shifting priorities, resource constraints, stakeholder behavior, and external uncertainties.

Are leaders truly “in control”… or are they navigating systems that are inherently uncontrollable?

I don’t think leadership is about being fully in control. Most projects are too dynamic for that.

The value of leadership is more in how people respond when things shift, how decisions are made, how priorities are adjusted, and how teams stay aligned through uncertainty.

Trying to control everything usually creates more friction instead of clarity.
