Should the industry influence the PM selection?

Often I hear PMs refer to themselves as generalists, and this leaves me wondering. From experience, many industry projects are quite complex and some very specialized and technical, and so how does a "generalist" PM function in these environments?

Additionally, what influence do the project environment and the industry have on the PM’s ability to succeed?

Although from a general standpoint it should not but in reality it does unfortunately. You may be able to cut across similar industries but that too may come with certain challenges.

The level of acceptance from the organization does also play a key role in selecting the PM. What are the consequences if the individual does not have the industry knowledge to succeed in his or her role? Will the individual struggle or thrive? Does the PM have the necessary backing from key stakeholders or sponsors to take on new tasks? ...to name a few.
