Portable WiFi Hotspots

I'm seeking advice on portable WiFi hotspots for the annual golf event I manage for the trade association I work for. The golf course we've been utilizing the past two years is gorgeous, but the WiFi there is not good. I'm looking for a solution that would help not only me as the Event Manager (I need WiFi to send text alerts via my CRM throughout the day), but for our charity partners who need WiFi on the course for their fundraising efforts. Any advice on products or other solutions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Golf courses can be surprisingly challenging environments for WiFi because coverage is often inconsistent across the property, especially once you get away from the clubhouse.

A few things I’d recommend thinking about before choosing a solution:

  • How many people/devices need connectivity at the same time?
  • Is this mainly for text/CRM usage, or will people also be processing payments, uploading photos/videos, etc.?
  • Do you need coverage in one central location, or across multiple holes/checkpoints around the course?
For smaller-scale needs, a high-quality 5G hotspot from Verizon or T-Mobile can work well for event staff and limited usage. Devices like the Netgear Nighthawk hotspots are generally much more reliable than phone tethering.

However, if multiple charity/vendor stations need dependable access throughout the course, I’d honestly look at this more like a temporary event networking setup rather than a simple hotspot purchase.

A few options that might be worth exploring:

  • Renting commercial/event-grade hotspots from a local AV or event technology company
  • Using multiple hotspots placed strategically around the course
  • Asking the golf course which carrier historically has the strongest signal onsite (huge factor)
  • Running a small test day before the event with devices from different carriers
One thing people often overlook: even the “best” hotspot will struggle if 100+ attendees are all competing for weak cellular coverage in the same area.
