Beside the core PM Skills and relevant application area skills, soft skills are most important for the PM. Within the Soft Skills Leadership and Communication are two related skills without which project manager's PM Skills and Technical skills are of no good use.

Hi chibike,
in addition to my fellow posters i would say that there is no ONE single key skill a project manager must have and than he is successfull.
If so, than anybody could do the job, right? ;)
Furthermore a project manager need a big, big Toolbox of skills (technical and social and methodical and ... ) where he can choose from what is needed in the specific situation.
Just my 2 cents.

I agree with everyone's posting.
Yes, soft skills are very important!
Having the skills that are related to the new PM triangle would be great: leadership, business acumen, technical project management (cost, schedule, scope) so that you can provide value to the organization. Saving Changes...

Many believe that once you have a plan that's it. Things will go just fine. That's like the baker who assures himself that he used all of the right ingredients for his cake. He used an up-to-date oven and the best ingredients. The only problem is that he forgot to monitor the cooking process. He walks away moving onto other things and then comes back to a burnt cake. PMs can spend an eternity working with the project team to plan and obtain comprehensive requirements, but their projects fail because they wrongfully "assume" that the project team is executing according to the plan. PMs need to put on their chef hats and continually monitor their projects to ensure the execution phase is moving along as planned. The PM should maintain this mentality throughout the entire project measuring progress against the plan and making adjustments accordingly. This will help to ensure that the ship is moving in the right direction. Saving Changes...
Agree with everyone's comments.. just to add my 2 cents.... having AAA (accountable, adaptable and accomodative) qualities in a Project manager can help to succeed..... Saving Changes...
