Intuition or gut feeling is normally treated by many as a valid input for many decisions. Can this be considered as creativity? and if yes, will it result in innovation?

Innovation comes from necessity and somehow necessity has relation to your gut feeling, that certain "thing" will work in certain way.
Many of the scientist had good humor that resulted in inventions. So surely your belief in "THAT" thing can result in innovation.

Yes, there could be a connection between intuition and innovation but you can certainly have innovation without it.

Hi Suhail,
Good question. I know many people who use intuition in great measure and who are successful.
I don't rely on my intuition. Perhaps I have a malfunction in my limbic system which causes my intuition to mis-fire.
I don't trust it in important decisions, rather I rely on analysis and dialogue. Through these processes, if something looks like a good solution and my intuition says yes, I trust it.

Hi

Sure, creativity es the seem of innovation, i use different technics storm ideas, design thinking, bone fish, to plan how to solve specific problems and identify what is the best option to apply in a company or situation.

Normally the person who know the process, know the solution.

Regards

Intuition by itself is not creativity but an idea supported by intuition may lead to innovation. A definition of intuition from Encarta is: "the state of being aware of or knowing something without having to discover or perceive it." Having intuition or an instinctive feeling about something is a momentary event.

Innovation is creating something new and can happen without intuition. It is a process. Companies innovate all the time based on empirical data gathered from a variety of sources purposely keeping intuition out of the process. Employees or customers may have good or bad feelings about the innovation without knowing the details, but by themselves those feelings are not part of the innovative process.

Thank you all for your valuable opinions. We all understand and agree that intuition may result in innovation, but as Judy said, not always. Innovation may come from other sources as well. then the question is what innovation really comes out of? My wild guess would be, it always comes out of creativity. If my answer is correct then why and how sometimes we see intuition resulting in innovation and sometimes it does not. Again my next wild guess would be that if your intuition is creative it will always end up in innovation, if it is logical, it may not. As Michael Adams said, he does not rely on his intuition so he is always being logical, but at the same time, does he not closes al the doors to creativity and thus to innovation? I would agree with Christopher that innovation is creating something new and that is like an invention.

My statement here, "No invention in this world have ever been made out of logic, it was creativity which prompted innovation and thus the invention, it is only later you develop and establish logic around the invention." I may be totally wrong in whatever I have said but that's how my mind works.

From the definition quoted by Christopher Casey and the comment made by Judy Brennan and Saurabn Mahajan above I see that it is possible/easy for Innovation to be driven by Intuition but not the other way around.

Intuition is a powerful tool if used correctly - you may want to look at a couple of books by Eugene Sadler-Smith of the Uni of Surrey in the UK. He is a leader in this area, and particularly in how intuition informs business decisions.

Also - Intuition is one of the basic components of organizational improvisation - a subject that I have published widely about. However, there are issues, and many people therefore use intuition coupled with the adaption of previously successful intuitive and/or improvisational interventions - this relies on tacit knowledge, and arguably reduces risk. I have written on this topic and presented on it at PM conferences.

You may want to look at my publications in this area at http://people.bu.edu/sleyb - click on the publications tab and some of the papers are downloadable as .pdf files. If you are interested in a paper that isn't available there, contact me and I will send a copy...

I hope this helps.
