Prompt engineering is the process of designing, testing, and refining prompts to guide AI tools, such as ChatGPT and PMI Infinity, to generate accurate and relevant responses. For project managers, it is important because it helps improve decision-making, automate routine tasks, enhance project planning, and maximize the value of AI in delivering successful projects

Perhaps the real value of prompt engineering for project managers goes beyond learning how to ask AI better questions.

A strong prompt forces us to make context, assumptions, constraints, and decision criteria explicit.
But even an excellent prompt can produce a convincing answer that is wrong for the project.

The critical capability may therefore be less about prompting alone and more about exercising human judgment across the entire cycle: framing the problem, guiding the AI, challenging the output, and deciding what should actually influence the project.

Better prompts improve answers. Better judgment determines whether those answers deserve to shape decisions.
