Digital transformation refers to the evolution of business process as a result of innovations in digital technology.

More specifically, by “digital transformation”, I mean the evolution of both business and consumer behaviors, as a result of digital technology empowering them and, as a result, changing their old ways of doing things.

Our business processes -- whether long-antiquated or more recent, early stage digital versions of them -- continue to be reimagined and iterated upon, as a direct result of technological innovation and shifting expectations. Anything and everything can be digital, and it’s changing the way we do business. ?

As an example, this company, Metso, drastically changed their business through digital transformation:

I agree that digital transformation can greatly revolutionise your business processes. The transformation in itself is a change you are bringing to organizational processes and would therefore be achieved through a project. So definitely PM has a role in digital transformation.

Digital Transformation will ultimately comprise a large portfolio of projects, so I'd venture that a PM should be configured as a Program Manager for such an effort. Additionally, the process almost always benefits significantly from outside help - bringing in a consultant to help drive Digital Transformation efforts can help significantly in overcoming organizational bottlenecks.
