Seeking Advice on Transitioning into Project Management

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to learn from those of you who successfully transitioned into project management from another career.

I earned my CAPM earlier this year and have been intentionally trying to build both my skills, network, and land my first formal project management job. I've joined my local PMI chapter, pursued mentorship, attended Chamber and Rotary events, refined my resume and portfolio, developed case studies to better demonstrate my experience, and have been actively earning PDUs.

One area where I've been struggling is connecting with practicing project managers. I've reached out for informational conversations, but haven't had much success getting those discussions on the calendar. I suspect those conversations would help me better understand the field, strengthen my network, and identify gaps I may not be seeing.

—For those of you who made a similar transition—or who mentor career changers—how would you approach this? If you were in my shoes, where would you spend your time over the next 90 days?

—Is there something you found especially effective for building relationships within the profession?

I'm not looking for someone to find me a job. I'm simply trying to make sure I'm focusing my energy on the things that are most likely to help me become a stronger project professional.

I'd really appreciate any advice or perspective you're willing to share. Thank you!

Micah, you’re already doing many of the things I'd recommend: earning your CAPM, joining PMI, seeking mentorship, attending networking events, and building a portfolio. The reality is that today's market is very competitive, and many experienced project managers are stretched thin, so it's not unusual to have difficulty scheduling informational conversations.

One option you might consider is working with a career or leadership coach who specializes in project management. While it's an investment at a cost, a good coach can provide objective feedback on your positioning, help refine your job search strategy, identify experience gaps, and introduce a more structured plan for breaking into the profession. It won't replace networking, but it can help ensure you're spending your time on the highest-impact activities.

I'd continue doing what you're doing while looking for targeted guidance from someone who has successfully helped others make the same transition. Good Luck!

Hey Rami, that's great advice. I did hire a career coach, but she is not specialized in PM. And maybe that was a mistake. Luckily, I only have two more sessions with her that I've already paid for. But, I can switch gears moving forward. Thanks!
