These are basic knowledge you should have -
1. Ability to communicate.
2. You always should be ready to list down the items and prioritize.
3. Ready to listen what your team and stakeholders are telling.
4. You must be aware of at least one Project management tool.

I agree with Pravin. New Project Managers need to develop their skills in:

a. communication
b. collaboration
c. follow-through
d. documentation
e. negotiation

(in addition to these standard project management skills: leadership, business, acumen, technical project management - cost/schedule/scope management, quality, and value)

I'll add to what Pravin and Arlene have said only in that Networking should be considered an essential skill for anyone coming into the field of Project Management. Finding the right people to ask questions to and having the comfort to do so without hesitation will be vital for a long time. Further, the value of a dedicated mentor in the PM community can't be overstated.

The first thing is to clearly understand what does mean "successful" inside the organization you are working regarding project manager role. And more important is to understand what the project manager role is inside the organization you are working for. It is amazing to find how organizations are talking about project manager when they really want a project leader or project coordinator. You need to understand that no matter what you know or what you think about project manager you will work inside an organization where the project management culture determines your acts more of the time.

I think, till the time, a new entrant does not understand what a project means he cannot be helped my mere communication, collaboration and the likes. Very first thing anyone really needs to know and understand is the definition of project and the basic framework. For this PMBOK Guide can be a very good starting point.

Of course, plenty of practice with soft skiils, a PM needs to be able to work with people. To add to what others are saying, a PM needs to know their project team members. They need to learn who they can rely on and who they need to lean on to get things done..
