Will AI change what we consider "project management experience"?

Hello PMI Community, My name is Nasira Kiran, and I am new to the field of project management. As I continue learning and exploring this profession, I've been thinking about how AI is changing the way project managers gain experience.

Today, AI can generate project plans, meeting minutes, risk registers, schedules, and reports within minutes. This is improving efficiency, but it also makes me wonder how we should define "real project management experience" in the future.

If AI performs much of the routine work, will practical experience be measured differently? Will organizations place greater value on judgment, leadership, stakeholder management, and decision-making rather than documentation?

How do you think AI will reshape the way future project managers build and demonstrate professional experience?

An excellent question.
Perhaps the bigger shift is not in how we measure project management experience, but in how it is developed.
As AI increasingly supports routine activities, experience may become less about producing project artefacts and more about developing judgment through real decisions, collaboration, trade-offs, and adaptation in complex project environments.
AI may change the nature of the work, but meaningful experience will continue to be built by making decisions, learning from outcomes, and working with others to deliver successful projects.

I think organizations will place even greater value on the work AI can't do independently, making sound decisions, navigating uncertainty, building trust, and leading people through change. AI can accelerate many project activities, but it still relies on someone to provide context, validate outputs, and make the final decisions.
To me, project management experience will be defined less by the documents we produce and more by the outcomes we achieve and the judgment we demonstrate throughout the project lifecycle.
