In project environments with tight budget and time restrictions the demand for efficient approaches is high. This also affects the project risk management processes.

As a response to such challenges a lean project risk management concept has been worked out.

The concept is based on two elements:
1. Weekly assessment of 8 standard risk factors or “root causes contributing to risks” proposed by recent research studies.
2. Weekly mitigation priority suggestions provided back to the project manager.

A first test series of this concept was conducted on real software development projects with project managers from different companies located in the US, the UK, Germany, Switzerland and India. Per design there were two groups: the “test group” and the “control group”.

The “test group” applied the concept on a weekly basis for several weeks. The “control group” was surveyed only once on the 8 standard risk factor and mitigation activities.

The following test observations could be made:
1. On average the “test group” members spend effectively just 3 minutes per week.
2. The “test group” perceives more risk factors than the “control group”.
3. The “test group” mitigates more risk factor than the “control group”.
4. The “test group” mitigates perceived risk factors with higher emphasis than the “control group”.

The test observations indicate that the lean project risk factor management concept seems to steer the focus of the project manager to the appropriate standard risk factors in a time and cost efficient fashion.

Try out this concept for free on one of your projects in order to gain such benefits too!

In addition you would receive insights on your individual project risk factor management behavior versus the “test group” behavior.

If you are interested in it just reply or send me a short message.

Any interested person is much appreciated!

I like it. Just a bit of focused attention on a regular basis to the things that can easily be ignored can pay huge dividends. Would love to see the study as well.
