Tools for Process Asset Library

I've sparked the interest of the mgmt team in evaluating a formal PAL tool (database like) instead of perpetuating the Word based spaghetti of processes we have now.

I need ideas! Looking for something that can place approved policies, processes, procedures, standards, tools... into a controlled environment. Environment must be easy to access, drill down, and use for the person on the floor (web based?). It must be easy for the SEPG to manage and control. It must allow for multiple views including for example: 1) let me see all the policies that apply to my job 2) Let me see how to build/manage my requirements 3) What training do I need to provide for my new staff member. Also, we would like to be able to link process assets to model requirements like ISO 9001-2000 and CMMI. Maybe even be able to link to our training database (MS Access for now).

There's got to be something so he doesn't go off and have it built by the software guys.

We use our internal tool ("Qview") for this purpose across all locations of our organization. It is a web based tool with lifecycle specific processes and it is very successful. We also implement the tool to our clients/companies by request.

Please get back for further queries.

We had a similar problem within our SEPG. We ended up "growing our own" PAL. It uses an MS Access database to catalog the assets (title, desciption, version, date, owner, KPA, asset type, related assets, size, role, etc.). A copy of the database is put on the web server and is accessed via an ASP front end. There are only 2 main ASP pages: one for the table of contents/navigation, and one for displaying the "results" of the navigation (i.e. list of all checklists, all assets added in the last 2 weeks, or a detail view of a specific asset). I also created a third ASP file that gives the ability to "send" a link from a PAL asset to another individual via email. What is special about this ability is the link will open the PAL up exactly as it appeared when the link was sent (left & right frames, not just the main page -- no more digging around to find the asset).

I'm giving a presentation on 12 Sep 01, at our local (San Antonio) chapter of the Software Process Improvement Network (SASPIN). The slides should be available on the website (www.saspin.org) with 72 hours of the presentation if you are interested.

Check out IBM Rational Method Composer (RMC ) or the open source Eclipse process framework (EPF)
