Why do PM hesitate to shadow train students at their job site?

Project Managers should be more supportive to future PM's, taking the time to allow shadow training, encouraging new PM's is important.
I believe that just as Project Managers plan for projects and are always thinking about what is best for the success of a project; project managers should also be just as aware and open to help and encourage the new blood for the same reasons.

Only if the PM concerned is following some standards and methodologies, and not involved in bad practices, will she be transparent and confident enough to let a new hire shadow her. She will also ensure new hire does not hinder the progress or speed of work in the learning process.

I would be happy for someone to work shadow me, but to be honest you wouldn't learn much from watching me respond to emails or make calls all day. A better plan for new PMs would be to work with a dedicated mentor or coach, someone who has the time to explain why they are doing what they are doing and what the new person could learn from that.

Dear Elizabeth,

I believe that even in your phone conversations someone can learn from you, because of what you have to say. The manner in which you choose to speak to people and the thoughts that you share to help people is so vital to any business. So yes you do have a lot to offer, just the same in your emails. Your emails are a good form of communication in today's society; it's all about technology. What a person thinks and says is why businesses are successful so don't think you can't train someone. If a person has the same interest as you do in your career then for sure you have a gold mine to offer.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me

Dear Sonia.

I feel very identified with your thoughts ! !
I have the exactly the same issue (and need) here in the Madrid area (spain). Currently I am in my final steps and allmost ready to aply for my PMI certification exam.
But here in madrid, if also find it hard to find someone who would also be so kind to give me some realtime experience. As I am quite new to this and I am subscribed to the Madrid chapter.

I must confess I don´t know many people (yet) here in madrid. And I I am a bit reluctant to send an email or pick up the phone and ask for it.

It is a big shame that within the Madrid chapter there is no option to find or connect with a pool of professional PM what would be willing to guide, show me all the details of their work on a day-to-day basis. I belief that beeing able to shadow a real PM in action would clarify many doubts I might have and would help me alot.

I really would like that.

Wil just keep looking and do some networking to (hopefully) find someone who would be so kind which wouldn´t have no problem beeing shadowed.

Hoping that some one of the Madrid chapter will notice this reply and take some action :-)
Many thanks for sharing your thoughts
Regards,
Paco

I came across such a situation, Honestly my PM never shared much of his work nor he trained me in the initial stages, many times i approached him seeking advice, single answer " i will get back to you" , when i did analysis on him then i came to know how INSECURE he is about his position, In my second project i was coordinating with my new PM, he just guided me to success. Now I feel, Knowledge is invincible, the more your share the more you gain....

Luckily for me, my organization agrees with you, Sonia. Part of my objectives is to share my PM knowledge. I accomplish this through various tools and techniques: FAQs, collaboration site, mentoring, and coaching.
