Scaling up IT and PM processes

Has anyone ever worked in a business that expanded rapidly, to the point that it was important to adopt more robust PMO and IT policies, more fitting of a large company? I'm facing this and I'm interested to know what the challenges are likely to be, as well as the benefits. Thanks!

I'm seconding Elizabeth's question. I'll be entering a new work situation where I'll be expected to revamp the PM's operational and implementation processes.

The company is a small-medium sized startup and it's looking to turn that corner. What we will need is scalable practices and pronciples that can be quickly adopted.
