Good Afternoon - I'm a Certified PMP in IT looking to join a PMO. Please provide information if you have experience in transitioning from a project manager role to role in a PMO. Thanks.

I suppose it is a natural progression for any project manager. If you did not have a PMO in your organization, a lot many responsibilities which would have been taken up by a PMO, you would already be doing that. As a project manager you develop a project management plan and the guidance you get as to how you do it from the standards, policies, guidelines provided either by the organization or if they have a PMO, from that PMO. Similarly the governance structure and the organizational objectives are instrumental in the work of project manager. If there was a PMO, they would be coming through the PMO. Now you want to ether establish that missing PMO, or join an existing one. You should now have a fair idea what you are expected to do in a PMO, except now you would not be working for a single project but would be looking after and overseeing many or maybe all projects and programs of your organization.

Thank you for the information Suhail. I do have a question regarding managing many project and programs within a PMO. At that point wouldn't that position be referred to as a Program Manager, or is there more involved to a Program Manager's role?
