How far technical knowledge will help a project management professional in a industry. Is it really required? Can't a project management professional survive just with management techniques in a technical project?

To Bala''s point, my clients and project sponsors prefer to have PMs who have managed projects in their industry, rather than an industry expert. It''s not quite the same thing.

For example, I managed government, manufacturing and healthcare projects. That is usually more important to stakeholders than I be an expert in any of those industries'' technical side.

I prefer to use my referent power with my project team, rather than my expert power. I can build the latter by simply being attentive to them and showing integrity.

Thank you for the different vision and views from all my PM friends around the globe. It was so informative and knowledge gain.
