Managing the ethical behaviour of employees.

As a PM, I went through this unique experience of at the receiving end of unethical behaviour of both team members and senior management at the same time. Do you have any suggestions to handle such tough situation? Please share.

You have to establish a code of conduct or honour for your agile projects. Sometimes the same code you use for waterfall or for that matter for the whole organization, may apply, but if not, you have to device and get approved such a code of conduct for ethical behavior in agile projects.

I agree with Suhail's comments. In some cases senior management doesn't show the transparency about certain decisions made for project.Please demand transparency in all decisions.

Timely feedback and a gentle reminder to their reporting manager will do a lot of wonders. Also, reminding them of the policies and gentle feedback face to face works. You may have to apply both from time to time.

Pravin and Suhail have pretty much defined the provided a solid approach. Most enterprises and companies will have an employee code of conduct. And though you may not be able to prevent any unethical behavior from ever taking please, you can identify, raise it and discuss it to ensure it does not become a habit. However, full transparency is best from the onset.

I agree with the idea of having a code of ethics for the Project, and the higher up in the organization it comes from the better. When the team members violate that code, the project manager has some leverage, but when it comes from Senior Management--now that''s tough! In some cases they will listen and change behavior, but in others they may not. In that case the project manager may have some decisions to make. Not always easy for sure!

Bruce is right, I had been through a tough time because of the unethical behaviour from top management. It was like going through hell. I don''t want reveal How I handled it now. I''ll come up with a separate article on that later.
