Since ISO 9001:2015 has been published, it''s done away with Preventive Action in favor of a risk-based approach to quality management systems, holding that preventing negative risks is part of quality risk management. However, PMBOK 5th Edition has held Preventive Action alongside Project Risk Management since long. ISO ''s new QMS approach makes sense to me, why have a separate Preventive Action plan going on, when identifying risks is a continuous process throughout the Project Lifecycle?

Yes Momina, Preventive measures can be taken up within risk management. Probably, you don''t need a separate preventive action plan. I think, it is there to basically comply with ISO standards as many companies implement ISO standards you cannot contradict it with your Project management practices.

From that point I understand, but overlapping makes it hard to implement PMBOK best practices practically within an organization where people are wary of over documentation. I find myself going back through the rest of PMBOK seeking out where there are other overlaps. It''s a great guide, but I look forward to a cleaner version 6.

It is an error to believe that the new ISO 9001:2015 "risk based thinking" requirements eliminate Preventive Actions. In Contrare - it will enable a renaissance of preventative thinking, even more than with CAPA in ISO 9001:2015. Preventative action is death - long live preventative thinking based actions to "kick off" ANY new ISO 9001:2015 based holistic risk plan harmonized along any BOK in your Integrated Management System IMS...
