You will get opportunities to interact with top leaders and project management professionals from your region.
Local chapter conducts many Technical talks and webinars.
They facilitate Regional PMI conferences and other events, If interested you can even volunteer such events.

Dear Bala, Japan Chapter is one of the expensive ones to join if you compare prices for local chapter memberships fees. But, it is more than what I expected. I am a very goal-oriented or a planner person, so before doing most things, I already have ideas on what I want out of an initiative.

My Positive experiences are:
1. When I volunteered for an event, even attending one, the local chapter fees are already a Return on Investment. That is because you get ideas and exposure on how the professional PM works in the country that you work with as opposed to just being a member of the PMI.org.

2. Depending on how your Local Chapter is structured or way of doing things (I am guessing it is not the same for every country, although there is a basic foundation on how to manage Chapters) I get to do study groups where I am interested to stretch or learn my profession.

3. I get to do after-session/meeting/study group socializing with them (eating out/drinking out) which we actually have fun, discuss real life PM space experiences and you get to learned from those.

4. You get exposure on other industries (if you volunteer on their events for free), and that gives you ideas on how the business works as well.

It might also give you ideas on how to use the network you''ve mingled with for either furthering your career or just introducing someone to somebody. It is good to be of service to others, for other people help you as well.

5. You can definitely leverage joining local chapter within your work space in that your colleagues will see that you have insider knowledge of the industry. PLEASE be careful that you do learn about these things so that their expectations are met because it will backfire to your career/work if they think you are a very good PM in the future just because you have joined local chapters and be perceived as subject-matter-expert in the project management profession.

6. You will get to compare the PMI guidelines/knowledge with your country''s industry''s best practices/methodology and get to combine these knowledge to be a more effective project manager or practitioner.

I hope this helps, and let me know your experience in the future as well. Rosalinda Bernabe

Joining local chapter avails you the opportunity of meeting other projects managers in your area and be able to interact with them, sharing knowledge and seeking help if need be. There are also local chapter events that are very good in keeping you up to date with your career, helping you to earn free PDUs and availing you the opportunity of volunteering.

I love this conversation! I just met the president of the Bangalore Chapter at PMI''s Leadership Institute Meeting in Orlando. If you get involved with a chapter, especially as a volunteer, you are sure to get more out of it than you put into it! The president is Murali Santhanam and you can see the chapter board here: http://www.pmibangalorechapter.in/index.ph...rd-of-directors

Brantlee, good for you. I love meeting people as well. Please forgive me, but i need to test if I can type Japanese, and whether it is readable. Can you respond if you can see characters instead of unreadable blurrings?

Hi Rosalinda - When I received the email notification of your comment, the Japanese showed in that email. However, here on the webpage, I don''t see the characters:)
I am going to share this with some team members so they are aware that the Kanji is not appearing on the webpage. Domo Arigato!

Hi Bala:
Joining a local chapter (in my case PMI Chennai) was one of the best career moves I ever made. I joined PMI Chennai as a member way back in January 2005.
The move helped me make valuable contacts & friendships, learn from experts in the field and making genuine, lasting professional relationships.
Being member of the chapter and attending around 7-8 meetings a year also means you never have to worry about acccumulating 60 PDUs in three years to maintain your PMP credential. However, the greater value is in the PM Tips & Tricks, Soft Skills you can learn from these sessions -- they really do help you manage projects more successfully!
I was soon volunteering with the Chapter & ultimately ended up as Chapter President.
The experience was so rewarding that I still continue to volunteer for PMI in various roles and at many different levels.
All this gave much satisfcation of "giving back" to the community and real tangible value., making the decision to join the local chapter a real no-brainer.
If you have any other questions, please send me a Direct Message. I will be very happy to answer your questions over eail or by phone.
