I am current looking to change careers from the sales and marketing management area to project management. I have some experience with project management and have completed the Comptia IT Project+ certification (formerly Gartner Certification). Any advise for job seeking or general direction? I have been told that my best bet would be to get into a consulting role somewhere first then move to PM. Additionally, I am trying to stay local (Detroit,MI market) and have a minimal amount of travel asa we have a new 5 month old at home.

Intersted in some realistic direction.

Hello James.

I just saw this post. I hope that you are already engaged in some sort of project management job right now.

For newcomers, the best way is to start with being a Project Assistant or Coordinator or Intern. You will then be exposed to the day to day life of a Project Manager and you will then know whether you really want to be a Project Manager. You can include in your professional development plan with your boss your intent to be a PM so the organization can help you realize your career goals.

Hello James --

Welcome to Project Management! Your Sales experience will serve you well in the PM profession because we all "sell" -- for resources, ideas, support, sponsors, etc.

For getting started, reach out to your local PMI chapter. They have a wealth of information and local connections. Also consider getting CAPM certified by PMI. (Certified Associate in Project Management). This certification is designed for those new to the profession. Having a credential is increasingly important for today's PM.

And consider volunteering for your local PMI chapter or other community projects to gain diverse project and team experiences. Wishing you much success -- Connie
