I wish I had, Fosco. Something like Lean Six Sigma requires organizational support and financial commitment. My employers have not made it to that level yet.

We are currently going through a revamping of our methodologies. I hope my employer will consider embracing a quality approach such as Lean Six Sigma.

I hope it,
anyway I suggest you to go ahead in this way in any case. the knowledge you can acquire through this certification is very useful for your project management work.
I found a course through our market association and request the approval to my employers which accepted (at moment i think I'm the only one in my company!!) probably you have the same opportunity in Canada. consider that the course take around 60 - 80 hours

I am currently finishing a university course in preparation for my PMI-SP. I was thinking of PRINCE2 as my next goals but perhaps Lean Six Sigma would be a better choice?

it depends on your interests and needed. I'm not very expert on PRINCE2 due to in Europe is mandatory when you work with English companies (but is not requested for companies from other countries).
lean six sigma basically offers to you a rigorous method for learning problems and finding solutions and, it is my consideration, is based on a project management approach - in the sense that "your problem solution" is considered like a project.
if you'd like to learn more (and you are familiar with DMAIC process), I suggest to you to read "the black belt memory Jogger" .

Thanks for the recommendation, Fosco. I did a quick search and was not able to find a place where I could get in ePub format. I'll try to get my hands on a paper copy.

Hi Fosco,

I've has some exposure to six sigma but never got certified. I worked under those who had very early in my career. I would suggest you move to a manufacturing company as that is where there seems to be a concentration of lean support.

Fosco, am a certified Lean six Sigma green belt and as Stephane pointed out, you would need the backing of the organization, not just to complete it but also to be able to implement it within your projects. Some organization have RIGID frameworks and follow specific approached to execution of projects. Fortunately we have some opportunities where we can do projects using Lean Six Sigma or the waterfall. We are now also thinking of bringing in Agile :).
On application front, I would say it has its positives and negatives. One has to be clear on where we use this methodology. We use it mostly on the process side and the rest of the projects including Organization projects are carried out using the standard methodologies. If you follow the principle either using DMAIC or DMADV it should be a cake walk :). Also a Lean six sigma project can result in a IT project using the waterfall method

Kiran,

Most interesting. I'd be interested to see how you implement agile in unison with six sigma. I have had success using it with kanban, as they play off each other nicely.
