Talents are usually understood to be gifts. For example, the Bible has references to talents being money given to individuals.

As I have grown older (wiser?), I have come to realize that talents are not gifts in the true sense of the word. In other words, you are not born with talents. Rather, you are born into an environment that facilitated your acquisition of the talents.

Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" is a great book to show that talents are made, not gifted. Toastmasters International's slogan is "Where leaders are made".
