Hello All,

Looking to get some foothold on a good place to start building my Project Management skills, confidence and overall knowledge. Quick backstory; I''m a carpenter by trade, and have worked my way up the ladder as it were at my current company who specializes in off-site construction. My current roll is Project Coordinator; I did spend the better part of three years as a Production Assistant working under a Project Manager, working on items such as Scope breakdown, costing, Bill Of Materials, trade / customer liaison etc, and document control; this included items such as NCR''s, Change Orders, RFI''s etc. Over the last year I''ve been taking on projects of my own still under mentor ship, and have recently been given the job title of ''Project Coordinator''. Our firm is typically schedule driven, so I usually gravitate towards critical path articles etc. Most of our ''bread-and-butter'' projects have a 4-6 week production schedule from approval of drawings. All that being said, it can be a bit overwhelming navigating what to read, absorb etc. I''m this close to signing up officially with PMI to work towards either CAPM or PMP, but at the very least to start building some official training; thus far it has all been on the job training with some brief on-line courses about three years ago. I love my job, I love the Project Management process and theory, but I know I can do better. Any sort of ''top 5'' or construction specific springboards are much appreciated! Many thanks and hope to be an active member of the Project Management world.

Welcome to the Project Management world, Matthew. I just sent you a connection request so you may start building up a network of international Project Managers.

If I were you, I would take a PMP prep course. In my case, I also worked as a PM before getting certified and was quite an experience to fill the gaps between the hands on experience and the standard project management knowledge and methodology.

If you are really interested in PM, I would also recommend you to join LinkedIn where you can then subscribe to various PM related groups (some of them require to be PMP certified).

Best regards,

Eduard

Thanks all for the responses. Eduard, do you recommend any particular PM groups on LinkedIn? I''ve checked out the official PMI group as a starting point.

Many thanks.

Welcome to the project management world. I think you are well on your way to finding learning opportunities and joining PMI will open up even more connections. Another great benefit of PMI membership is access to all premium content here on projectmanagement.com. Enjoy and best wishes on your PM Journey.

One of the most active LinkedIn Groups in PM is "The Project Manager Network - #1 Group for Project Managers", with over 750k members.

There are others such as "It''s all about project management" and "PMI Credentialed PMP" that are also interesting. Take a look when you have a chance!

I''m sure you''ll get plenty of good advice, tips, etc from everyone else. Just wanted to say, if everyone approached things in the way you describe with your backstory, there would probably be a lot less problems out there... good attitude and approach, keep on pushing
