I know that risk management is heavily utilized in fields such as safety and aerospace. But are there other industries, such as business, that have embraced the risk management philosophy?

What Mr. John said, I totally agree with it. But it is called risk tolerance. It is not necessary to take actions or make a action plan for all risks. Sometime we know from the experience that the probability is very low so we just avoid it. Sometime we are more focused on other aspects and neglect it. This is the place where we face it!!!

But still it depends upon you and your organisation.

Most of my experience (federal gov''t) has been that large organizations, depending on their expertise, view risk management as a "pick up game." In other words they deal with risks as they happen. As you well know this is a very reactive approach to the issue. Some will ID the main risks to the project, but few will actually complete the risk analysis process. I think some of this is a function of not having PMPers in the gov''t. I suspect as the PMP field grows, risk management will become more important...at least on paper. Resources (contingencies reserves) is something all together a different level of importance.
