Dear readers,

Upon earning my certification in project management I feel that although I have certainly developed my skills in budgeting & cost controlling (i.e. by using earned value management). However, I would like to further develop my knowledge in the economic area, which is often referred as business acumen. I am keen to learn more about what goes in before the project kick-off, i.e. the business case, return on investment, funding, payback, finance, risks, etc.

Is anyone aware of a course or certification that addresses that matter? Has anyone taken it and what is your opinion?

Thanks in advance to your prompt reply,

Eduard

Hi Eduard,

I believe PMI-PBA is a certification you need. Have a look here:

Hi Eduard, There was a lot of info about business case and modelling in PMI''s Business Analysis Virtual Conference yesterday. PMI is making a substantial effort into the area of Business Analysis, and it may help in the areas you are focusing on. I''m going to be looking at some of the of the resources in PMI''s Business Analysis Reference Material Guide in the days ahead (http://www.pmi.org/certification/business-analysis-pba.aspx and then click on "Reference List").

It sounds though like what you are really looking for is all the things they teach in Business School. I did my MBA in an evening program at a local University after work, and while it was a big time and energy commitment, I learned tons. It''s a great complement to an Engineering degree. Just a thought.
