I''ve been considering certification in Business Intelligence, Program Management or maybe something else... I have been in the Healthcare industry for 20 years and want something that compliments this industry. Thoughts?

Beneficial for what? Promotions, recognition, use, knowledge, etc? What do you want to get out of it, education, higher pay, etc? Do you work at the technical level, strategy planning, etc?

Each cert is different and could provide different value based on your situation, but even two people with the same cert may value/use it differently and get something different out of it.

I think the first step is to define what your ultimate goal(s) is(are) and then go from there. I''m in the healthcare industry as well, but no one cert is going to compliment the industry as a whole, because people working in that industry are at different levels with different responsibilities and functions.

Currently, I have my PMP and CSM certs, and I''m looking at PRINCE2 as it''s similar to the PMP, but PRINCE2 is PM Methods/Process based, while the PMP is PM Knowledge based. Also if you plan on working ourside of the America''s, the PRINCE2 is frequently the 1st preference over the 2.

However, there are a number of Healthcare specific certs out there as well.

Again, it all boils down to what do you want out of it, and what will you put into it.
If you just want an alphabet soup after your name, more job opportunities, just choose whatever has the best name recognition and value. If you want something you will learn and grow from, find what fits your current or desired job role the best regardless of it''s popularity/name recognition.

(Don''t forget to consider costs, requirements, etc - if a cert is very expensive and has a large number of requirements for re-certification, etc, and you just want for recognition, realize the commitment it takes to keep it)

Thanks! I really want to get into BI because healthcare is so behind other industries. I would ultimately like to run a BI project, so it needs to compliment my ultimate goals. I was just wondering if others have done BI projects in Healthcare without other certifications - which is how I should have worded it.

No - I do not want alphabet soup to my name, I do not even use some of my certifications on my name. But if someone were to trust me with their BI or Population Health project, I''d like to say, "I have... ____ certification, in addition to my PMP".

Thank you for you insight! It really helped.

It depends on what area you would like to specialize in. Some certification like PgMP, PMI-PBA, PMI-ACP are helpful in different knowledge domains of a project.

Best Regards,

Different strokes for different folks is what i would say.

Every certification is a tool that prepares you towards something. First choose your destination then determine the tools that will help you get there.

For marketability focus on whar the recruiters know.

For knowledge, branch between certifications that have established bodies of knowledge.

I have found that my Scrum Master Certification for use with agile projects has been the most useful and valuable certification I have received to date. I would think that it would be very useful in the Healthcare Industry as I know there many companies using it.

For project management related, some popular certificates are Six Sigma, Scrum Master, PgMP, PMI-PBA, PMI-ACP, PRINCE2, it really depends on how you plan your career path.

Thanks.
