I did it by self study and did not even refer to Rita's book as it was not even there at that time. Though I studied many books on project management by various authors to brush up my knowledge of project management. Just studying PMBOK Guide in never enough. Rita and other study guides are good to practice concepts and exam questions but you must read some hardcore project management books latest in the market by some renowned authors also. Passing PMP Exam is not a run of the mill certification which can be passed just by studying PMBOK and Rita. Those who claim they did pass based on only these two resources, are otherwise experienced and are able to relate their long standing knowledge and experience through these two resources.

There are lots of resources online to help you study. Some sort of book that explains how the PMBOK works is worth while... If I could emphasis one thing, do lots of practice tests and get used to the situational multiple choice questions... Here's a post on some of the books I used to study: http://www.thisdigitaladventure.com/blog/2...ou-need-to-pass

The single best way to prepare for the exam is to take as many practice exams as you can. Honestly, if you took 10-15 practice exams, you may not ever need to crack open the PMBOK or any other study material, and you could probably still pass the exam.

Every person has a different approach to study and learn. Some people do pass by doing only self-study. Even if you take a training, self-study is still required. But I would not recommend only self study. You should read the following post and imbibe all the points written in the post. This will help you in determining what you should do and what you should avoid. * 15 reasons why aspirants Failed PMP Exam Let me just talk about one point from the the post. Attend a Formal 35 contact hours training You should attend a formal training followed by self study. This approach has many benefits. A formal training * can reduce your effort (and save time) by helping you to do a targeted study. * would clarify your doubts and make your self-study easier. * would motivate you do finish exam quickly. * would give you study material and tips for passing the exam. Usually the classroom training is the best. But it is more expensive also. If you are worried about the cost or if the classroom training is not available in your region then you can go for online classroom. * review & comparison of 6 popular instructor-led online PMP training courses here - PMP Instructor Led Training Courses * review & comparison of popular 6 self-learning training courses - PMP Online Training Course

Good Luck.

You can see that each individual studies in a manner that best suites themselves, focusing on their strengths. Best you decide the best method for your learning style and stick to that.

Personally, I used self-study with the PMBOK only, in conjunction with a boot camp and the associated materials. I did a lot of writing, flash cards, study sessions with frequent breaks to keep the mind fresh.

When I sat the exam, I used my experience with sitting other exams. Although the amount of questions and time were far above what I was used too, I was familiar with the testing center and procedure. I used some methods to trick my mind to help with the number of questions and timing. I skipped the first 10 questions, skipped all formula questions, and skipped all diagram questions. I did those last. I only took a bathroom break when all questions were complete, and prior to the review.

Markus is accurate; prepare physically and mentally. Respect your body, feed it properly, exercise, eat the right foods in moderation. Leaving the room for a break takes a lot of time. Choose wisely.
