I don't have what you are looking for, but I'm looking for a good summary of what steps should be take to be HIPPA compliant. Have you found something userful?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 provides rights and protections for both group health plans and individual coverage. These rights and protections address:
Portability - Whether you can get new health coverage if you want to change coverage
Availability - Whether health coverage must be offered to you and your dependents
Renewability - Whether you are able to renew health coverage

Included in HIPAA is Section F, Administrative Simplification, which is generating a lot of work for software vendors, providers, payors, and healthcare transaction clearinghouses… and project managers. I'm assuming that you are interested in Admin Simp. If so, then the starting point to understanding "HIPAA compliance" is to go to the source:

http://aspe.os.dhhs.gov/admnsimp/Index.htm

There is also an incredible wealth of information on the web regarding HIPAA, its background, what is required, etc. And (suddenly ) there are also a number of HIPAA consultants who want to help you!

Not knowing which business you are in, the question of compliance process and templates is difficult to answer. However, most all of the Admin Simp issues will affect providers, payors, vendors and clearinghouses as they strive to be compliant with the code sets, transactions, security, identifiers, and privacy issues. Some compliance is required sooner than others. President Bush recently signed a bill that provides for a delay in certain compliance aspects. The scope of the compliance issues is very large and therefore a template is not likely to be found as the impact of Admin Simp will be unique to the types of business and services that are provided by your organization.

Feel free to post back, or e-mail for further clarification or input

There is a great conference put on by HIMSS (Health Information Management Systems Society) coming up the end of this month. It has a lot of classes on HIPPA. Check out www.himss.org

That's a great link, thanks. What really helped about your post is explaining how HIPAA is broken down. Thanks.

I recenty spent a lot of time searching the web for HIPAA project plan templates, realizing that given the nature of HIPAA, any such plan would be very generalized.

I found a wealth of information describing HIPAA, and dozens of vendors offering their services, but no such templates.

There are also dozens of informational web sites, such as http://hipaadvisory.com/live/

If anyone has planning documents to share, please post.

I wonder how organizations are approaching the HIPAA challenge. Are program offices being established like they were in Y2K, to make sure all the individual projects and initiatives are coordinated and completed in time? Are organizations staffing up to handle the surge of work facing them or are resources being diverted from other initiatives?
