Risk is definitely a vital component and must be addressed. But can we say that it is the "main key"? What is the main component of a car? Each componenet, each process is vital. That is part of the challenge of a project manager--juggling all the vital processes. Which is demanding my attention at this exact moment?

Sure , But still a lot considering communication is playing the main role in project success , some others see that it is the integration management others look at the risk,,,,,

Like Bruce said, "juggling" is required. Risk, yes, in a way is the MAIN KEY since whatever we do, we are always managing and controlling (playing with) risks but when it comes to PROCESSES, risk management is yet another process requiring attention at its due time.

Hello Mohamed,

may be it is because of your Name?!?! :)
Just kidding ... ;)

To be serious, i think a lot so called "PM's" doing project management by "managing risks" and therefore the risk mgmt process may be the most important.

From the PMI point of view, risk mgmt is just one the pm processes which are all important and essential (otherwise they wouldn't be in the PMBoK ).

I believe that it depends on the phase and the situation where the project actual hangs on, which project process would be the most relevant in this specific situation. Sometimes it may be risk mgmt and sometimes it may be stakeholder mgmt and so on ...

Regards,

Markus
