I will talk about my personal experience and what I heard by years from others around the world. You need to have domain knowledge. But you dont need to be a subject matter expert about the domain. As project manager, each time you will start a project, you need to take knowledge about the domain. No matter you have been working in the domain and no matter the initiative is an internal project. To do that, my recomendation is to take the row 1 of Zachman framework as a guide and to use techniques to take knowledge about the what?/who?/when?/how?/why? things happend in that domain.

A project manager having knowledge and/or experience in the domain or industry they''re working in should always be considered an asset and never a liability. As far as domains that are popular in the IT industry, that''s hard to say. You''d have to define "IT industry" first before you considered what domains were relevant to the companies contained within that industry. As far as technical competencies go within the IT field, having knowledge and skills in areas like project management, architecture, technology infrastructure, governance etc. can all help you to round out your overall credentials as a project manager, regardless of which industry or domain you may be practicing in.

Let me tell you domain knowledge is highly desirable if you are to be associated with a project in a particular domain from RFP and initiation phase to closure phase. This is because each industry domain has its specific challenges and standards. Having a technical and non technical view point to a problem gives so much edge to the project manager. If you add domain knowledge, and more than that domain specific experience to that , it does make you stand out among the lot.
You can find a lot of domain certification opportunities in fields like banking, insurance, telecom and utilities domains. While most of them are taken up by business analysts, nowadays, based on the need of the hour there have been many who have been taking domain certifications at the basic level and the certifying authorities also have taken some interest to these basic certification needs.
I would suggest you check with business analysts of your organization for any organization specific domain certification needs. But remember while a domain certification puts you on fast track as far as domain knowledge is concerned, experience doesn''t really have any substitute. A domain expert with 15 years of domain experience will still be preferred over a green horn MBA with multiple domain certifications for a position which specifically demands domain knowledge to understand customer needs.
