ICQ/Netmeeting - how did you get your company to adopt them??
Neil CouttsPM Consultant| KPMGAlloa, United Kingdom
Just a general question about ICQ which i note is mentioned a number of times above. I have used this at home for personal use, and never understoon why organisations do not use it (or tools like it more actively). My company does not have ICQ - indeed there is no 'approved' collaborative tools here. MY question is how did you approach getting approval for it? How long did it take? Were you cavalier and just install it on your laptop, or did you actually address it as a mini-project implementation? I would be very appreciative of your views. Saving Changes...

Dear Neil, many firms have security issues with consumer oriented chat tools like ICQ. Both Microsoft and IBM offer and are improving upon their collaboration offerings (Exchange Server, Lotus, etc.)with enterprise security and performance in mind as well. And there are a number of commercial enterprise instant messenger (EIM) products now in the market for both ASP and customer install implementation options. As enterprise adoption of IM continues to rise and IM begins to overtake e-mail as the preferred form of electronic communication, it's inevitable that businesses must develop a plan to manage IM use and address security risks, threats, regulatory requirements and corporate policies. A complete archiving solution must comprise both policy-based software and a storage medium that ensures the integrity and authenticity of the content. For these reasons and more, organizations typically do not adopt consumer chat tools like ICQ. Cheers. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International Saving Changes...
