Planning for "optional" iterations

I posted this on another section of Gantthead, but since it it not listed in the page of discussions that you get when you click on the discussions link on the home page, I figured I'd resend it here, where it will get a bit more attention.

I know that in my Critical Chain world, we have buffers to help deal with the idea of iterations (like test-fix-text-fix-test...fix-test-approve that may or may not be necessary.

I'm curious how others deal with allowing time in the project for iterations without specifying specific tasks that tend to get used whether really needed or not.
