What is your experience with Centers of Excellence and Centers of Practice?

Do you have a preference? Do you think they are effective?

CoE is a level above CoPs and it provides necessary governance mechanism for CoP (if they exist mutually). Otherwise CoE and CoPs may also exist in isolation. I would differentiate CoE and CoP as Governance vs Management respectively.

Interesting. I've always seen this relationship two ways.

1) A group of practitioners come together informally to form a CoP. This may lead to a CoE in time if supported by management.

2) A CoE is abandoned bu the members keep the practice going through a CoP.

CoE = Center of Excellence
CoP - Center of Practice

CoE = Cost centre, formal support, centralized
CoP = self-organized, informal, community specific
