Is it really necessary that a PM should be technically proficient or is it enough if she/he is strong in Project Management?

Not necessary to be technical proficient. It will be up to you if you can convince an organization to take a chance on you. I say that because, you will have a ramp up period.

However, if they pair you with a strong architect or business analyst you would be more then fine.

Steven, He / She should have the lesst technical requirements. For example, I consider myself excellent in PM and I have an idea about IT so can I manage IT Projects ? No !

You need to be strong in PM and have the right skills set including Technical Skills. Techical skills are important because they will support you in decision making, planning, risk identification and execution. If you are not technically sound then you might manage to manage but not fully manage.

I disagree. His question was if it was necessary. No. It's not. A strong team could help and its not necessary.

Hour premise is not about necessity but about efficiency and effectiveness. A PM who has good understanding of the work to be managed will be able to do the same job better. But ifbyou don't have that experience you could still execute the project without it.

And it's not practical for a PM to have specific experience in everything they manage.

Well, different point of views. I can't say you are wrong and u can't say I am wrong. Everyone sees things from a different angle. I understood his question, and I find it necessary.

Having the right technical skills will help you manage better.
