Hi all,
I’m in Australia at the moment, writing on a diploma thesis for a German degree in applied computer science and digital media at the FH Furtwangen.
The objective of the thesis is to analyze how multimedia projects have been managed so far, which methods of other industries (e.g. software development, movie production, etc.) might be suitable and/or how these would need to be adapted in order to suit multimedia projects.
One issue I’m facing is that I can’t come up with a solution on how to balance the risk of an inaccurate proposal against too much unpaid research work: usually a client wants a fixed price as soon as possible during negotiations. The earlier I give a fixed quote however, the greater the risk for me as a developer not to have enough details on what is required and then having the project run over budget through feature creep and specifications which have been defined to broadly and therefore leave to much room for interpretation.
On the other side developers can’t to spend weeks and weeks of unpaid research and possibly prototype development, to come up with detailed enough specs.
What’s the current and most probable solution to this issue?
I would kindly ask you to share your opinion.
I can’t really find that much research material on this topic, and I’m also lacking required job experience and knowledge to make this thesis an industry-relevant paper without your help.
Thank you very much for your help.
Kind regards,
