Great points Adil!!

I participated in the review of V3, it has improved quite a bit. I'm half way through the practitioners guide and find it surprisingly rich. Hopefully this leads to a more mature practice.

Do you find employers ask about one or another?
Steven, I found employers are not so aware of PBA still. CBAP is well known and sought after but PBA I have not found many even understand that this is a Business Analysis certification.

As you said, I too hope this leads to more mature practice. PMI getting involved in Business Analysis is a good thing for BA profession.

Depends on your career role and direction.
PBA: more relevant and sufficiently covered for project work. requirements tracks, managing stakeholders' expectations, communications management, validate requirements... all are very critical while working on a project. The roles of PM and BA do overlap, depending on what work at what stage is the manager involved in. So it always helps a PM to have the next level of expertise on handling stakeholder requirements, which is where PBA suffices.
PM manages requirements 'also'.
CBAP: a full fledged career as a Business Analyst. Would come handy to a PM, but not just a PM!! With in-depth knowledge on analysing of business needs, this is more of a specialized field of work, not a 'subset' of any other work. Outputs of BA could go not only into a project work, but to other organizational strategic areas too. But then, those strategies may get converted into projects eventually.

My career revolves around project based assignments mainly. So my primary skill being project management, PBA suffices to the extent it can contribute to my project work.

Interesting discussion points in here. In my experience, I have been noticing that job postings are requesting the PMI-PBA certification as well, so employers are definitely aware of the PMI-PBA. The number of hybrid PM/BAs are also increasing as organizations move towards a more agile way of implementing projects which makes the PMI-PBA more attractive. If you possess both project management and business analysis competencies, it makes you much more marketable in today’s environment.

Also note that there are over 100K that have associated themselves with the Business Analysis/Requirements Management Practice Area here at ProjectManagement.com, over 62K downloaded PMI's BA Practice Guide and over 17K attended the PMI BA Virtual Conference. Those are some pretty incredible numbers. PMI is generating quite the buzz around business analysis which as a practitioner, I'm super stoked about so folks will finally realize the value of business analysis!

In case you missed the announcement, PMI will be launching a foundational standard in Business Analysis, so expect a lot more business analysis content from PMI in the near future supporting not only PMI-PBA certification but also the business analysis profession. Having the project management and business analysis professions under one roof means better PM/BA role collaboration and an opportunity to merry the processes and terminology to enable better integration which as the Pulse of the Profession reports indicate, will lead to more successful projects and programs.

Do what you do best as analysts and take a look at what's happening in the marketplace and I think the decision will be clear in terms of what will be the gold standard.

All the best to everyone :)

I did the CBAP after PMP, since most of my PM work (40%) was related to requirements gathering and management, procurement of new products and services for telecom.

I forgot the scenario to move on with the PBA certification since it should not add value on top of the CBAP.

My main issue is the "relationship" with both associations and the payment dues since it's expensive to hold both.
