Steven, I personally believe they compliment each other and somehow believe that CBAP is the next step after PBA. Check this out and let me know what you think:

I agree, I think the PMI-PBA will become the entry point or minimum qualification for BAs over time with the CBAP still remaining the gold standard or MBA equivalent for BAs.
My sense of the PMI-PBA is that it revolves around the project. That is, business analysis as a phase and deliverable within a project.
The CBAP appears to be a little more standalone, not framed within the confines of a project. In fact, the CBAP includes some management functions which could have normally been the purview of the project manager.

I feel, CBAP goes into details about Business Analysis as a profession.
PMI-PBA is more geared from a project/program perspective and role delineation between a PM and a BA or how they certain times conflict each other. Also, having taken both the exams, I felt CBAP was more definition oriented when PBA was situation oriented.
Also, with BA Practioner's guide PMI did a good job and IIBA's new BABOK V3 has improved a lot.
I feel both certifications complement each other.

I participated in the review of V3, it has improved quite a bit. I'm half way through the practitioners guide and find it surprisingly rich. Hopefully this leads to a more mature practice.

Steven, I found employers are not so aware of PBA still. CBAP is well known and sought after but PBA I have not found many even understand that this is a Business Analysis certification.
As you said, I too hope this leads to more mature practice. PMI getting involved in Business Analysis is a good thing for BA profession.
