What are some methods and practices you use to engage with nonsupportive stakeholders?

They could be nonsupportive due to not finding value in the initiative, being the recipient of extra unwanted work as a result of the project, they may not receive the value from the project directly...etc.

100% Agreed.
The essence of my comment was that when facing a negative SH of higher degree, it helps a lot if you have a positive SH who trusts you or both of you see the project objectives from the same platform. That advantage negates the hurdles coming forth due to the negative SHs.
Right, this is a very true statement.

I always found the issues with stakeholders interesting. As a project manager, this is really a big part involving the communication and people management. For this raised question, I am thinking, if assume those non supportive stakeholders are the key stakeholders. I would prefer to do a deep dive to figure out what hold them back. Maybe we need to find a way to better present the initiatives or values generated for them.

Otherwise, if assumption made is they are not key stakeholders, we might think about how close and influential they could be. Then, we might need to communicate with them to get it through instead of asking for more support.

- I would try first to understand why they are not supportive using one or more of the following methods: put myself on his perspective, interview, talking with others.
- Do I share his concerns or is there a lack of information or a lack of communication? I would adopt a communication plan to efficiently manage those stakeholders.
- What is in the project for him? I would try to find deliverables from the project that could work as a benefit for him.
- Can I change his view of the project? If there are some chances I would do with team members a stakeholder management plan to change him to neutral or supportive stakeholder.

Find out the reason for their attitude - make sure you know the real reason for their "opposition".
There could be a good reason behind it. Anyway, sometimes you can win them just with the fact that you consider their opinion and a respectful treatment.
